Chapter 7 of the United States Bankruptcy Code allows individuals to eliminate or discharge most of their debts. Under Chapter 13 of the Bankruptcy Code, individual debtors are allowed to rearrange their financial affairs by repaying a portion of their debts. Under a typical Chapter 13 plan, the debtor makes monthly payments to a bankruptcy trustee, who then distributes the money to the debtor's creditors.
